HEALTH PROMOTION AND EDUCATION IN HEALTH SERVICES

3rd semester

Learning objectives

The course aims to assist students in becoming familiar with the person-centered approach in health services and practices for integrating health promotion into daily practice. It presents behavior change models that promote health behaviors (such as smoking cessation, improvement of diet and physical activity, etc.) and support self-management in chronic diseases. The principles and strategies of the International Network of Health Promoting Hospitals & Health Services are emphasized. The course also refers to the negotiation of important health conditions and their supportive services at various levels of prevention (universal, targeted, and indicated prevention).

Upon completion of the course, students are expected to:

  • Understand the standards of the International Network of Health-Promoting Hospitals & Health Services.
  • Describe the person-centered approach in health services.
  • Be familiar with the framework and applications of Healthy and Active Aging.
  • Understand evidence-based interventions for various health conditions (support for caregivers, peer support groups, psychosocial health support for immigrants and refugees, self-management support for chronic diseases, parenting support, prevention and management of child abuse and neglect, etc.).

Course Content

Course content includes the following topics:

  • The International Network of Health-Promoting Hospitals & Health Services: the experience of the National Network of Health Promoting Hospitals & Health Services (HPH).
  • HPH Standards: commitment of the organization, ensuring access to services, patient-centered approach and user involvement, healthy employees & healthy work environment, health promotion in the broader community.
  • Healthy and active aging.
  • Support for caregivers in dementia.
  • Peer support groups.
  • Psychosocial health support for immigrants and refugees.
  • Self-management support for chronic diseases.
  • Parenting support through health services.
  • Prevention and management of child abuse and neglect through health services.
  • Stigma and prejudices in health services.
